The iconic Meat Market in North Melbourne is celebrating a new chapter with the launch of the Blackwood Box, a new flexible rehearsal and performance space in the old Flat Floor Pavilion.
Now available for hire, the 380 sqm acoustically-treated Blackwood Box can be enclosed for rehearsal, theatre presentation and small-scale events, or opened up into the adjoining Cobblestone Pavilion for large scale events.
Backed by the Victorian Government, the new space has been designed by Melbourne architects H20 to meet performance, rehearsal and event requirements across a range of artforms. The space was constructed by builder Jointly, and will provide a fit-for-purpose rehearsal facility for Orchestra Victoria (also a Meat Market tenant) and creative space for festivals and broader sector use.
In addition to the Blackwood Box, Creative Victoria has also led work to create a new accessible ramp at the rear of the building. This provides an accessible connection to the courtyard and carpark, improving bump in and production support for events, and food and beverage delivery.
Meat Market is a much-loved creative space that provides homebase for a range of creative organisations as well as performance, event, rehearsal and meeting room spaces for hire by the creative community.
The Meat Market precinct is a State-owned asset, and the day-to-day operations and bookings are managed by the City of Melbourne.
