How did you start out in music?

I have always been musically inclined. I think that is just what happens when you grow up in the church! I listened to a lot of my Dad's music growing up which is where I found soul and RnB. Then I branched out into finding multitudes of incredible influences as I grew up (with a small dubstep phase in 2010). I have always involved myself in the arts and it just felt very natural and correct. I feel very lucky to know what I am meant to do in this life.

How would you describe your music?

I would describe it as a blend of soulful influences. I take inspiration from old-school soul such as Bill Withers and am inspired by the songwriting of Yebba, Lianne La Havas and Cleo Sol. My songwriting is very influenced by the life lessons I go through. I like to write knowing that the audience will be relating to this from their perspective. I love knowing about how a song I've written has impacted someone.

How did you get involved in the GRID Series Geelong program?

I was not going to apply as I thought maybe the dates wouldn't work or I wasn't a good fit but I got a few messages encouraging me to apply regardless. I am so grateful that I did! The cohort that came out of GRID 2023/24 is something I will cherish into my career in years to come.

What did you learn from the program?

I had just left a collaborative project and started doing my solo stuff - it felt like I was being reborn as an artist, starting from scratch. GRID helped me gain my confidence back. It was nice to be reminded that I do have a hold of the process. It was also really nice to be connected with so many incredible people who are not only talented but kind and very community minded.

Tell us about the single you produced as part of GRID?

Lover Girl is a love letter to all the givers of the world! The ones with big hearts and who love endlessly. It is a reminder of knowing boundaries and protecting yourself, as well as acknowledging the pain and joy that comes with giving all of yourself to people. It can be tiring and empty when not returned, but the true lovers keep loving regardless of the output. This song is for them!

What’s next for you?

I will be playing at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. Very honoured to be on this incredible line up. I am also currently working on an EP to be released next year. Very excited to be sharing new music!

GRID Series Geelong applications close Wednesday 2 October.
