Victorian screen talent and locally backed projects have been recognised in the 2025 Oscar nominations.
Leading the local charge is Victorian feature film Memoir of a Snail, which has been nominated for Best Animated Feature.
Director Adam Elliot’s melancholic claymation movie, made in Melbourne, was supported by the Victorian Government through VicScreen and the MIFF Premiere Fund.
It’s another tilt at an Oscar for Elliot, who won an Academy Award in 2004 for his short animated feature Harvie Krumpet. Producer Liz Kearney is nominated this year alongside Elliot.
Guy Pearce was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Brutalist, along with fellow Victorians Greig Fraser (Best Cinematography for Dune: Part Two), and Maya Gnyp (Best Documentary Short Film for I Am Ready, Warden).
Robbie Williams biopic Better Man was nominated for Best Visual Effects, alongside Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. All of the impressive VFX for Better Man were done locally, while some of the effects work for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was completed in Victoria.
The Academy Awards are presented on March 2.
