Boundary-pushing fashion designer Alexander McQueen was one of the most celebrated designers of his generation – and in December his garments and accessories will dazzle Victorians and visitors at the NGV.

Presented in partnership with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos, Muse boasts over 100 pieces from McQueen’s critically acclaimed catalogue alongside 70 historical artworks that influenced him.

Praised for his outstanding technical skills and capacity to tell stories through his garments, McQueen tackled subjects ranging from technology to geography and his personal experience. Tragically, he died in 2010 at just 40.

Alexander McQueen gives fashion and art lovers the rare opportunity to see examples from the designer’s renowned collections, including The Widows of Culloden (autumn-winter 2006–2007), Deliverance (spring-summer 2004) and his last complete body of work, Plato’s Atlantis (spring-summer 2010).

Following a long line of drawcard fashion exhibitions at the NGV – including presentations of the work of Chanel, Dior, Gaultier and Viktor&Rolfe – this new exhibition is set to wow local audiences and attract fashion lovers from across the country.

Alexander McQueen will be launched on Saturday, 10 December at the NGV Gala, a celebration of art, fashion, fine food and wine. The exhibition will run until 16 April 2023.
