Alex was a recipient in the first round of the Sustaining Creative Workers Initiative.

Tell us about you and your creative work.

I am a cinematographer who works primarily on narrative films, documentaries and expanded online content.

I am also a founder and director of Sissy Screens, a queer screen culture magazine which has received support through Creative Victoria’s Vic Arts grants.

How has coronavirus impacted on your life and work?

Coronavirus has affected the film and entertainment industries significantly; most of my upcoming shoots have been cancelled or postponed.

How are you coping or responding at this time?

I am coping by focusing on personal, passion-type projects. The kind of work I’ve previously sidelined due to time constraints. I’ve also been spending more time re-evaluating what projects are most important to me.

Do you envisage new creative sector opportunities emerging from this crisis?

I hope so – there has been a significant rise in development-focussed funding opportunities for film and moving image projects. I think the streamlining of grant processes has also encouraged more artists to apply, resulting in more diverse projects being supported which is a great outcome.

How has your recent Sustaining Creative Workers grant supported your practice?

It’s given me the opportunity to research and develop an online series exploring LGBTQIA+ elders for Sissy Screens – which I’m very excited about. This project means a lot to me and all the queer creatives and subjects involved. This is a project which celebrates our queer pioneers and their influence on our lives today.
