Victoria’s prized music industry will receive a mighty boost with announcement of almost of $8 million in grants and more support on its way to continue the industry’s recovery and reactivation.
Grants through the Victorian Music Industry Recovery Program will back 133 Victorian music businesses and artists with funding totalling almost $3 million. This is set to support almost 5,000 jobs across the music industry which has been hard hit by the pandemic.
Grants will help produce COVIDSafe events, support the creation of new music, activity at live music venues, state-wide tours, business development opportunities and digital initiatives.
Projects range from live events, such as indie promoter Penny Drop’s 10-day series at Malthouse Outdoor, to livestream events from the likes of DJs Vinyl Vixens; and new work by Isaiah Firebrace, Ella Hooper and many more.
Over $5 million in grants will be invested in live music venues, as part the Victorian Live Music Venues program, supporting 68 music venues to withstand and respond to the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic and resulting closures and restrictions.
Supported venues included Melbourne’s Cherry Bar, Revolver Upstairs and Section 8, and regional venues like Gee-long’s Barwon Club Hotel, Hepburn’s Palais, Torquay Hotel, the Guilford Hotel and Bendigo’s Golden Vine Hotel.
The Victorian Government’s commitment to the recovery of the industry continues with more than $2.5 million to sup-port next round of Music Works grants which will open for applications on 29 January and close on 15 February. This will include a dedicated stream to support live music activity in regional and outer-metropolitan Victoria.
Since the pandemic was declared less than a year ago, the Victorian Government has provided close to $25 million in dedicated support to Victoria’s music industry.
