The centrepiece of the 2017 Melbourne International Arts Festival, Taylor Mac: A 24-Decade History of Popular Music won Best Special Event at the 2018 Helpmann Awards, announced in Sydney last night.
Taylor Mac also took the award for Best Cabaret Performer for the show, which was co-presented by Melbourne International Arts Festival and Pomegranate Arts.
Best Play was awarded to The Children, a co-production between Melbourne Theatre Company and Sydney Theatre Company. MTC associate director Sarah Goodes won Best Direction of a Play for her work on the production, while local talent Pamela Rabe won Best Female Actor in a Play.
Melbourne’s Celia Pacquola won Best Comedy Performer last night, while Gotye took the Best Australian Contemporary Concert prize for his tribute to Jean-Jacques Perrey.
Other Victorians honoured at the 2018 Helpmann Awards include Nicole Car, who won Best Female Performer in an Opera for her role in Opera Australia’s La Traviata, and Kanen Breen, who won Best Male Performer in a Supporting Role for his part in Coronation of Poppea by Pinchgut Opera. Geelong-born Amy Lehpamer won Best Female Support in a Musical for her role in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.
Each year, the Helpmanns recognise distinguished artistic achievement and excellence in the many disciplines of Australia's performing arts sector, including musical theatre, music, comedy, cabaret, opera, theatre and dance.
