This year’s ceremony was held last night in Melbourne at which twelve named awards, 20 national awards and eight national commendations were presented – and 15 Victorian projects have been recognised.

Monique Woodward, whose practice Wowowa is in Carlton North, was awarded the National Emerging Architecture Prize, while her former employers John Wardle Architects snapped up the National Awards for Interior Architecture and Educational Architecture for their Monash University Learning and Teaching Building.

RMIT University’s transformative New Academic Street won both the National Award for Urban Design and the Daryl Jackson Award for Educational Architecture; and GHDWoodhead enjoyed multiple wins for the magnificent Barwon Water building in Geelong, taking home the Harry Seidler Award for Commercial Architecture and National Award for Sustainable Architecture.

No stranger to good press, Breathe Architecture’s socially, financially and environmentally sustainable apartment block Nightingale 1 in Brunswick was recognised with the The David Oppenheim Award for Sustainable Architecture and National Award for Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing.

From the regions to the sea, Bendigo Hospital by Silver Thomas Hanley with Bates Smart received the Sir Zelman Cowen Award for Public Architecture for creating an ‘environment that prioritizes health as a holistic process of recovery and rejuvenation’ and House on the Coast by Sean Godsell Architects won the Robin Boyd Award for Residential Architecture.

Congratulations to three awe-inspiring residential projects that have been commended: King Bill in the back streets of Fitzroy by Austin Maynard Architects, Compound House in Brighton by March Studio and Collingwood’s Campbell Street by DKO Architecture and SLAB.

Architecture is a key part of the design sector, which broadly currently generates more than $5 billion in annual revenue and employs more than 85,000 Victorians.
