Foxtel has commissioned another twenty episodes of the award-winning series Wentworth which will see Australia’s longest-running one-hour drama series remain on air until 2021.
A seventh season is currently in post-production and will screen in 2019. Season eight is supported by Film Victoria and will commence production next year.
First aired in 2013, Wentworth is a re-imagining of the original Prisoner series and has been a global phenomenon. Over 140 territories have screened the series, including United Kingdom, France, Canada, Finland, Israel and Macedonia, and adaptations have been produced in four countries.
Wentworth was the first Australian drama to win both the ‘Most Outstanding Drama’ and ‘Most Popular Drama’ Logies for series 5, bringing the total number of Logie Awards to six. It has also won four AACTA Awards and four ASTRA Awards.
Since 2012, the series has generated $80 million for Victoria’s economy and created over 550 jobs behind and in front of the camera each season – and made an enormous contribution to Victoria’s incredibly strong screen industry.
