one step is one of 20 international companies commissioned by Sadler’s Wells in 2018 as part of 20th anniversary celebrations of the iconic London theatre.

The company will present its family-friendly production upsidedowninsideout over the Easter long weekend, specially adapted to respond to the Sadler’s Wells site.

One of the world’s leading dance venues, Sadler’s Wells took its name from a monastic spring that occupied that site before the first theatre was built there. The present-day theatre — a modern, 1500 capacity performance venue — is the sixth built on that spot since 1683.

upsidedowninsideout will give young audiences and their families access to an unseen world at Sadler’s Wells. The site-specific work allows children to lead the action, using an interactive storybook, clues and instructions to discover secret pathways and hidden gems backstage at the theatre.

upsidedowninsideout was first commissioned in 2015 by Arts Centre Melbourne. Sadler’s Wells commissioned the work after seeing it performed at the 2016 Australian Performing Arts Market.

one step at a time like this has also produced work for the London 2012 Olympic Cultural Festival, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Arts House, Dublin Theatre Festival and City of Melbourne.

upsidedowninsideout is at Sadler’s Wells Theatre from 30-31 March 2018.
