Circus Oz returned from its triumphant first tour of China last month, where it presented the show Model Citizens to several thousand new fans.
In late August, twenty Circus Oz cast and crew members travelled to China to present a season of Model Citizens at the Xuzhou Olympic Sports Stadium.
Strikingly lit and driven by a sensational live music soundtrack, Model Citizens unfolds within a cleverly designed model-kit world that challenges perspective, scale and concepts of normality. Like all Circus Oz productions, it blends physical improbability and showmanship with a distinct brand of Australian humour.
Chinese audiences and critics were delighted with Model Citizens, whichopened to a full house of 3,400 people. The production was ultimately seen by more than 11,000 people over the course of nine performances.
The Xuzhou Olympic Sports Stadium is in the Jiangsu province, with which the Victorian Government has a long-standing sister state relationship.
Though this was their first ever tour to China, Circus Oz has a strong historical connection with the country dating back to the early 1980s when the Nanjing Acrobatic Troupe visited Melbourne.
The 2017 tour to China was the latest international foray for Circus Oz which has performed in twenty eight countries around the world during its almost forty-year history.
