The Australian Performing Arts Market (APAM) is an internationally focused showcase of contemporary Australian performing arts. It was established in 1994 by the Australian Council for the Arts and has been held as a biennial event since then, first in Canberra, then in Adelaide from 1998-2012 and Brisbane from 2014-2018.
At the end of the 2018 event, the APAM baton was passed from Brisbane to Melbourne.
Creative Victoria would like to congratulate the Brisbane Powerhouse team on an extraordinary 2018 APAM – and for all its work since 2014 to develop our thriving, diverse national performing arts sector.
In establishing a new APAM office in Melbourne we look forward to powering up and continuing to create new opportunities to strengthen the sector and put Australian performing arts on national and international stages.
We’ll continue to do this through a flagship biennial event, alongside a range of other tailored events and programs, and through ongoing year-round efforts to broker new connections.
There’s been a lot of interest in what the next chapter of APAM will look like. While it’s still early days, we’ve compiled some Q&As that explain the new model, and respond to the queries we’ve had to date.
We’ve had some early discussions with international funding partners, as well as BlakDance and the Australian Blackfulla Performing Arts Alliance.
Together with the Australia Council, we hosted a meeting with our counterparts from the other Australian states and territories to ensure that the new APAM model maintains a strong national perspective and benefits the performing arts right across the country – we look forward to regular catch-ups of this nature and ongoing collaboration.
An independent APAM office is being set up to develop and deliver an offering of events, programs, services and activities that will roll out from 2020 onwards.
Stay tuned via our newsletter or social media channels for more details over the coming months.
