Swimming pool set up on Yarra River

Perhaps nothing defines Melbourne and its people more than the Yarra River Birrarung. Inspired by successful international urban swimming projects, Yarra Pools is a proposal to transform an underused section of the iconic river’s north bank into a thriving, water-based community facility.

Building on initial visioning by London’s Studio Octopi, Melbourne-based practice WOWOWA Architecture reimagined Yarra Pools as Melbourne’s first ‘blue park’. The naturalistic wetlands design pays tribute to the (former) waterfall on the site and seeks to promote healing, biodiversity and community empowerment. The project’s goal is to bring people back to the Yarra, to promote a swimmable river, and to celebrate the site’s unique cultural history through community involvement in the design process.
