Each year, the Hong Kong Design Centre partners with an international city or country that is recognised globally for the strength of its design sector. The most recent partners have included Italy, Chicago, Barcelona and Sweden.
In 2018, Melbourne is the Business of Design Week as the partner city. It’s the first time that a partner has been selected by the Hong Kong Design Centre from south of the equator and an unprecedented opportunity for Victoria to tell its design story to the world and benefit from this attention and profile.
The Victorian Government, through Creative Victoria, along with every Australian design association, is behind a campaign to push local design more strongly into the global marketplace.
As partner city in Hong Kong, Melbourne is in the international spotlight for the conference program, as an exhibitor, at official Business of Design Week events and in activities around the city.
At DesignInspire, a major exhibition and trade show at the Hong Kong Convention Centre, Victoria's design strengths will be on show in a specially-curated Melbourne Pavilion, featuring the Shared Values exhibition, curated by Ewan McEoin (NGV) and Phip Murray. The Pavilion will also draw people together for meetings and events that help to tell the Victorian design story on a global stage. Highlights also include the Melbourne Fashion Showcase, featuring nearly 90 Victorian fashion, shoe, accessories and costume designers.
