The 2017 Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Award nominations have been announced, with AB Original, Illy and Paul Kelly leading a strong field of Victorian contenders.

AB Original, a collaboration between Victorian rapper Briggs and SA rapper Trials, has picked up five ARIA Award nominations, including Breakthrough Artist and Best Group. The critically acclaimed AB Original debut Reclaim Australia was nominated for Best Independent Release, Best Urban Release and the coveted Apple Music Album of the Year.

Frankston-born Illy has had an equally impressive run, with five nominations including Best Video, Best Male Artist, Apple Music Song of the Year for Catch 22, Best Urban Release and Apple Music Album of the Year for Two Degrees.

Beloved music veteran Paul Kelly has received several nominations including Best Male Artist, Best Adult Contemporary Album and Apple Music Album of the Year for Life is Fine.

The album has already picked up wins at the 2017 ARIA Artisan Awards, with Peter Salmon-Lomas of Salmon Design in Melbourne taking Best Cover Art and Steven Schram taking the Best Engineer prize.

Kelly was also nominated for Best Blues and Roots album for his work with Charlie Owen on Death's Dateless Night. Archie Roach was nominated in the same category for Let Love Rule and multi-instrumentalist wunderkind Tash Sultana was nominated for Notion.

While making the shortlist for Breakthrough Artists, Sultana was also nominated for Best Australian Live Act alongside Victorian artists Client Liaison, Illy, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

Both Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and King Gizzard were nominated for Best Group, while Client Liaison picked up two nominations for Best Video.

King Gizzard and Airbourne both earned nominations for Best Rock Album, for Murder Of The Universe and Breakin' Outta Hell respectively.

Utopia by Castlemaine’s DD Dumbo was nominated for Best Adult Contemporary Release, as was Skeleton Tree by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. DD Dumbo made the list for Best Male Artist alongside Vance Joy and Dan Sultan, who earned nominations for Best Rock Album and Best Independent Release with the album Killer.

Victorian rapper Remi also grabbed a nomination, with Divas & Demons recognised in the Best Urban Release category, while Meg Mac was nominated for Best Female Artist.

Already announced in the 2017 ARIA Fine Arts Awards, Slava Grigoryan won Best Classical Album for Bach: Cello Suites Volume 1.
