Local independent retail chain Readings (Australia) has been awarded Bookstore of the Year at the International Excellence Awards, held during the London Book Fair.

Readings (Australia) beat three nominees from Italy, Estonia and China to take out the award.

With five retail outlets across Melbourne and an online store, Readings plays an active role in the Australian literary scene, directing 10% of the chain's annual profits to The Readings Foundation.

The foundation supports projects aiming to increase literary standards, foster enjoyment of the written word across all forms, and celebrates the role of creativity in community run projects.

Now in its 45th year, the London Book Fair is a global marketplace for rights negotiation and the sale and distribution of print, audio, TV, film and digital content.

The International Excellence Awards, presented in conjunction with The Publishers Association, have been held annually as part of the London Book Fair since 2014. The awards aim to recognise excellence in publishing across markets outside the UK.
