Entertainment giant Disney and Melbourne studio Hipster Whale have just announced a new partnership that will see the global hit mobile game Crossy Road, populated with your favourite Disney and Pixar characters for a new game, Disney Crossy Road.
The new game is based on the original Crossy Road game from Hipster Whale, which has been downloaded more than 120 million times since being launched in November 2014.
Disney Crossy Road will take players on an 8-bit endless adventure with more than 100 of their favourite Disney and Pixar characters. Players will be able to hop through nine different Disney and Pixar-themed worlds, each with their own unique 8-bit music.
News of the Disney/Hipster Whale collaboration was delivered at San Francisco's Games Developers Conference, where a huge contingent of Victorian games developers are currently in attendance.
Meanwhile, Victoria's Mighty Games Group – which includes the talents of Hipster Whale's Matt Hall and Andy Sum – has achieved another milestone. The company's debut game Shooty Skies recently reached over 5 million downloads.
The rapid growth of Australia's digital games sector was recently confirmed in a report by The Interactive Games and Entertainment Association.
The report shows that sales of interactive games in Australia increased by 15 per cent in 2015, reaching $2.83 billion, with mobile games designed for smartphones and tablets making up the largest portion of the sector.
Victoria boasts half of the country's digital games industry.
