Announced the 2016 World Architecture Festival in Berlin, the award recognises visionary design that responds to a changing world. The design concept was also the recipient of the WAF Education – Future Projects Award.

Currently under construction, the five-storey South Melbourne Primary School in Ferrars St is part of the Fishermans Bend urban renewal precinct. The school is due to open in 2018 with 525 students.

The World Architecture Festival judges said the South Melbourne project will be "an innovative and inspiring vertical campus, we believe it will be a great learning environment in a highly dense new development area".

First held in Barcelona in 2008, the World Architecture Festival (WAF) is an annual three-day festival and awards ceremony for the architecture and interior design industry.
