Artists in Schools supports primary and secondary schools to engage a professional artist to work with students and teachers on a creative project.

Artists in Schools provides opportunities for professional artists to work with young people in Victorian primary and secondary schools. It involves school communities in creative partnership projects while providing students, teachers and artists with diverse and challenging learning experiences. The program generates innovative ways to engage students across the curriculum from Foundation to Year 10.
The program provides funding of $10,000 for schools to engage a Victorian artist for approximately 20 days to work with students and teachers on a creative project in any art form. The program generates innovative ways to engage students across the curriculum and provides students, teachers and artists with diverse and challenging experiences.
Creative Victoria has staged a series of Information Sessions in the lead up to the 2017 Artists in Schools funding round opening in August. If you are considering applying we recommend you watch a recording to:

Applications are accepted from Victorian schools, including primary, secondary, government and non-government schools, including schools for students with special needs
If a school received Artists in Schools or Extended Schools Residencies funding for 2016, 2015 or 2014, it is ineligible to apply for funding for the 2017 round of Artists in Schools. See here for a list of schools (XLSX, 20.0 KB).
Projects that involve the artist working with the students in Term 1, 2017 will not be eligible. Projects can use Term 1 for further planning and preparation between the artist and school.
An artist can only be supported once in an AIS funding round.
An artist who has worked on three consecutive Artists in Schools funded projects is encouraged to 'take a break' from the program.
Schools that have not satisfactorily acquitted previous Arts Victoria or Creative Victoria funding are not eligible to receive further funding.
Artists may work in any art form or combination of art forms, including literature, visual arts, performing arts and new media.
The artist must be a practicing professional Victorian artist who relates well to young people and communicates, discusses and demonstrates their art with ease. Artists are required to have a Working with Children Check to work in a school.
Performances or workshops that are identical, or very similar to those that the artist provides regularly in schools on a commercial basis will not be supported.
In a school an artist acts as a facilitator, catalyst, resource or model. The artist demonstrates and shares insight into the skills and processes as well as the ideas and aesthetics involved in producing a work of art. If a collaborative work is created the artist should maintain the overall artistic direction.
The artist enriches teaching practice by passing on skills and knowledge through formal or informal teacher professional learning sessions. Routine classroom duties are the responsibility of the school not the artist. A teacher is expected to be present when the artist is working with students.
An Artists in Schools project needs significant support from the school.
The school needs to:
- Provide financial and in-kind support for the project within their own resources and/or through other external funding. The program will not support the entire cost of a project. Priority is given to funding artist/s fees. The school usually covers the other project costs.
- Provide adequate staff support, including a project coordinator and possibly a reference or support group.
- Allocate an appropriate working area for the artist.
- Identify the target group of students to be involved. An artist cannot be expected to work in a meaningful and in depth manner with large numbers of students.
- Ensure the project is embedded in the Victorian Curriculum.
- Welcome the artist into the school community
The Project Coordinator
The key contact person in the school takes on the role of project coordinator. The project coordinator is the liaison person between the artist and the school. He/she takes responsibility for the project and for the artist's stay in the school.
The project coordinator ensures that the project is integrated into the curriculum referring to the Victorian Curriculum, the Curriculum Planning Guidelines as well as student assessment and reporting processes as outlined on the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority website.
If the application for funding is successful the project coordinator and the artist will be required to attend an Artists in Schools Induction day in Melbourne during Term 1, 2017.
The 2017 funding round closing dates will be 20 September 2016.
It takes approximately 12 weeks from the closing date until funding results are available.
Approximately 16 grants of $10,000 are available for schools to engage an artist for approximately 20 days.
Creative Victoria receives more funding applications than it can support. Applicants should not make any financial commitment on the expectation that they will receive funding.
Funding is focused towards artist's fees. It may also go towards casual relief teacher fees and other direct project costs. Additional funding is available for projects in regional and remote Victoria to meet the travel and accommodation expenses associated with attending the Induction Day in Melbourne.
The Artists in Schools program is provided by the Victorian Government via a long-standing partnership between the Department of Education and Training through the Strategic Partnerships Program and Creative Victoria.
The Artists in Schools funding round for 2017 projects opens on 22 August. Applications close 5pm on 20 September 2016 for projects that commence after 18 April 2017.
Either an artist or a school may initiate a project, however it is the school that must apply for funding. Applications will be accepted on the online Creative Victoria Grants Portal.
Preparing an application
The information you need to start drafting an application will be available by July 2016. We encourage you to draft your application using the available drafting tools in advance of submitting your application online.
To prepare your application, you should:
- Read all the program information.
- Attend an Artists in Schools Information Session.
- Contact program staff with any questions.
- Draft your application (school and artist together) using the Application and Budget drafting tools and Application Documents and Supporting Material.

Application Documents and Supporting Material
- Artist's profile (DOC, 44.5 KB) – to be completed by the artist
- Curriculum template (DOC, 91.0 KB) - to be completed by the school
- Declaration (DOC, 41.5 KB) - to be completed by both the school and the artist
- Artist's CV and other support material
- If you propose to work with Indigenous content/artefacts, and/or an Indigenous artist and/or Indigenous community you must provide: Letters of support from the relevant Indigenous community/organisation and/or representatives. Please see here for appropriate protocols.
Applications need to be assessed with these documents and support material.
Submitting an application
When the Creative Victoria Grants Portal opens
- Ensure the applicant is registered on the Grants portal. This must be the project coordinator from the school.
- Copy and paste the content of your application from your draft template to the Grants portal.
- Upload completed templates and any supporting documents required as part of your application (refer to the Application Documents and Supporting Material section).
- Submit your completed application by 5pm 20 September 2016.
- Applicants will be notified of the outcome by early December .
Applications are assessed according to the following criteria:
- A strong and innovative artistic concept
- The involvement of a suitable practicing professional artist - high quality work and strong communication skills
- The extent to which the project supports learning across the Victorian Curriculum as outlined by the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority (VCAA)
- The extent to which the project creates opportunities for teachers to expand their skills and knowledge
- How well the project is planned and supported by the school.
The Artists in Schools program aims to support a balance of art forms and a diverse range of schools across Victoria. Priority is given to projects where the impact is greatest.
Applications are assessed by a Peer Assessment Panel.
The current panel members are:

- Tim Bateson - Artist, Curator, Leading Teacher (ICT), Thomastown Secondary College
- Helen Champion - Curriculum Manager, Performing Arts at the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority
- Andrew McMillan - Department of Education and Training representative
- Dave Jones - Animator, director, illustrator
- Lili Wilkinson - author of novels for young adults
Applications are assessed by an Advisory Panel, a panel of experts comprising external arts and education sector representatives.
The panel assesses and prioritises each application against the program's aims, objectives and evaluation criteria.
As a recipient of Creative Victoria funding, you are required to:
- Notify Creative Victoria of any changes to your proposed project
- Publicly acknowledge the support of the Victorian Government using specific logos and text
- Acquit your grant by completing a financial report, documentation and a written report on the outcomes of your funded project.
- Attend a professional development day.
Logos and Text Acknowledgement
The Victorian Government logo must be included on all promotional materials produced by the grant recipient in relation to the funded activity. The acknowledgement should include the wording and logo as follows:
"Artists in Schools - A Victorian Government Initiative"
These may include (but are not restricted to):
- Posters, fliers and brochures
- Information and education kits
- Programs and catalogues
The Victorian Government logo is available in a variety of formats, please note the guidelines for its use.
The following text/verbal acknowledgement of Victorian Government should be used in any speeches, media releases, interviews and other circumstances where a logo may not be possible:
Artists in Schools- A Victorian Government Initiative
When your funded activity is completed, you must provide Creative Victoria with an acquittal report within 60 days.
Failure to satisfactorily acquit funding will make you ineligible for future Creative Victoria funding and may result in action to recover the grant.

Professional Development Day
