Melbourne Winter Masterpieces

The Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series brings major international art exhibitions exclusively to Melbourne each winter.

The series was initiated by the Victorian Government to:

  • Attract national and international visitors to Victoria during what was traditionally the quieter tourism period.
  • Generate significant economic impact for the State
  • Generate significant national and international media exposure for Victoria

Since 2004, there have been 20 blockbuster exhibitions which combined have attracted 5 million local, interstate and international attendances:

  • Masterpieces from the Hermitage at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2015
  • David Bowie is at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in 2015
  • Italian Masterpieces from Spain's Royal Court: Museo del Prado at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2014
  • DreamWorks Animation at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in 2014
  • Monet's Garden at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2013
  • Hollywood Costumes at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in 2013
  • Game Masters at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in 2012
  • Napoleon: Revolution to Empire at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2012
  • Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharoahs at Melbourne Museum in 2011
  • Vienna: Art and Design at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2011
  • European Masters: Stadel Collection 19th - 20th Centuries at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2010
  • Tim Burton: The Exhibition at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in 2010
